"If it's bitter, it must be working."
— a joke in our house now, though we're only half kidding
Ancient Drops started with our dad. At a routine checkup a few years back, his doctor told him his blood sugar had crossed into pre-diabetic range — the kind of news that gets a family paying closer attention to what's in the kitchen.
He remembered bitter kola from home. Growing up in Nigeria, it was just part of life — chewed after meals, kept around the house, offered to friends the way you might offer someone a drink. He started taking it again, and he noticed something almost every time: enough of a shift that he started checking his own blood sugar before and after, just to rule out placebo. His numbers kept backing up what he felt, and over time his doctor moved him out of pre-diabetic range altogether.
He wasn't the only one who'd noticed it, either. He remembers friends back home describing the same kind of thing over the years — bitter kola and blood sugar is one of those pieces of common knowledge in Nigerian households, passed around long before anyone thought to study it properly.
That's what got us thinking about bottling it: something easier to keep up with daily than chewing the raw nut, which — if you've ever tried it — absolutely lives up to its name.
